Refugees & immigrants
Facilitator: Joan Horgan; socialjustice@newroadscatholic.org
Mission: This Social Justice sub-committee was formed in 2016 in response to the global refugee crisis. Our primary goals are education, advocacy and support for refugees and immigrants. In October of 2016, we presented a forum on refugees and immigrants. As an outcome of this forum, New Roads became the first parish in the Archdiocese of Boston to adopt a refugee family under Catholic Charities’ “P.O.W.R.” Program (Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees). As participants in this program, we adopted two refugee families. Our main collaborators in resettling and supporting this family are Payson Park Congregational Church and other members of the Belmont Religious Council. Looking ahead, we are seeking to collaborate with other faith communities in Belmont and other local towns in assisting recently resettled refugee families.
Meetings: This subcommittee meets the second Monday of every other month at 7 pm. Not currently meeting during the pandemic.
