New Roads Refugee Assistance
New Roads Welcomes Iraqi Family (July 2017)
New Roads welcomed a new refugee family to Belmont last month. The Hagani family is originally from Iraq. The parents have two sons, ages 16 and 5. They were forced to flee their home because of violence and persecution, and they have been without a home for much too long. The family is living in Belmont, so we have the opportunity to help them start a new life in the United States and to welcome them as our neighbors. Thank you to all who donated household items to help this family start their new life here! Check, cash, and gift card donations are still being accepted and can be dropped off at the New Roads office. (Checks should be made out to “St. Joseph Parish” with a note on the memo line: “Refugee Assistance Fund.”) Other local churches in Belmont, Watertown, and Waltham are working with us to welcome the Hagani family and help us support them in their transition to their new life in Belmont.

Update on Congolese Family (Feb. 2017)
New Roads Social Justice Committee offers a heartfelt thank you to parishioners from St. Luke and St. Joseph parishes for your tremendous and extremely generous response to our urgent appeal to help the three young adult members of the Congolese family who arrived in Boston on February 27, 2017. We thank you on behalf of the family, a sister, Rehema, and her two brothers, Mwati and Fazili Kyanga. We were amazed at the response from both parishes, and the family was overwhelmed by the welcome they received, which was reflected in your generosity. This was a crisis situation that resulted in an urgent, last-minute request from Catholic Charities for our assistance. The family had been living in a refugee camp in Burundi for fifteen years. Their mother and four younger siblings remain in the refugee camp in Burundi. Fortunately for the family, we learned that they have relatives in Worcester, where they have decided to move. They will use the furniture and other items which were donated, for which they are most grateful.
Another information session on the POWR (Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees) Program, under which New Roads “adopted” this refugee family through Catholic Charities, will be scheduled for parishioners. A reception will be held for Rehema, Mwati, and Fazili on Saturday, June 24, immediately following the 4:00pm Mass at St. Luke. Again, sincere thanks for your amazing response to this refugee family’s needs!
