Lent 2022 at New Roads
Lent is the Church’s annual season of preparation for Easter. Lent is an opportunity for all people to grow in their relationship with God. Renewed efforts in prayer, fasting, and giving characterize this season. At New Roads there are several opportunities to observe Lent and we invite you and your family to join us. Our kids programs take place at the 10am Mass each Sunday at St. Joseph.
Ash Wednesday - March 2, 2022
Pope Francis has invited all Christians to unite in making this Ash Wednesday a global day of prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine. Join us for Mass (with distribution of ashes):
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting for all able to undertake it. When fasting, a person eats one full meal and two smaller, simpler ones only. All the faithful are also called to abstain from meat on that day as well as all the Fridays of Lent. “Giving up” other foods and drink, such as deserts or wine, are another form of fasting and have become common practices as a way to refocus and turn back to God during Lent.
Giving & Almsgiving
The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels and a special project of Lent. We are asked to focus more intently on “almsgiving” which means the provision of goods and services, works of mercy and charity, or financial support to the poor as they are present around us. Giving also includes our tithe or offering, our worship offering in our place of worship as an act of worship. To learn more about giving to New Roads please click this link.
During Lent we also have the opportunity to participate in the annual Catholic Appeal in the Archdiocese of Boston. The Appeal supports the work of Catholic Parishes, Catholic Charities, and Catholic Schools throughout the Archdiocese and is our annual opportunity to lend a helping hand to so much good work that goes on throughout the year.
Lenten Message Series: "Seriously, God? Making Sense of Life Not Making Sense"
A friend’s child dies; a parent gets a cancer diagnosis; your spouse loses their job. Sometimes, life just doesn’t make sense and we end up feeling angry or betrayed, questioning God’s goodness and grace. While painful experiences can drive us further away from God, they can also be opportunities to lean in and learn more about God. Join us from March 6th to April 3rd for our Lenten message series "Seriously, God?" as we explore the denial, doubt, and betrayal we experience when we face hardship and life not making sense. This series can be heard at the 10am Sunday Masses at St. Joseph (and live streamed) or the 4pm Saturday Masses at St. Luke throughout Lent.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Reconciliation is offered every Saturday from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. at St. Luke church in the Eucharistic Chapel at the front of the church.
